Biography
With nearly 25 years of public service, Jon Porter has dedicated himself to serving the people of Southern Nevada. Jon’s extensive experience in local, state, and federal government has enabled him to fight for the issues that matter most in our local communities.
In 2003, Jon began his career in the Halls of Congress when he was sworn in as the first Representative from Nevada’s new 3rd Congressional District. After just two terms in the House of Representatives, Jon was awarded a seat on the prestigious House Ways and Means Committee, allowing him to fight for quality healthcare, lower taxes, and a strong economy from the ground floor up. He is also a member of the important House Budget Committee.
During his time in Congress, Jon has also served on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the House Government Reform Committee, where Jon led the Congressional investigation into allegations of mismanagement and distortion of official records at the Yucca Mountain project.
Jon’s record of public service began in 1983, when he was elected by the citizens of Boulder City to the City Council. Four years later, he was elected Mayor of Boulder City. In 1994, Jon was elected to the Nevada State Senate, where he was a leader in planning for school construction in fast-growing Clark County, the protection of Nevada’s vast natural resources, and providing prescription drug coverage to our Senior Citizens.
Jon understands the needs of Nevada’s small business owners, having built his long-standing roots in the state as a small business owner with Farmer’s Insurance Group. Jon Porter was born in Humboldt, Iowa on May 16, 1955. He attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. He has two children, J. Chris and Nicole.
